Pups First Swim of the YearTook the dogs over for their first swim of the year. The
ice has finally pulled back a few hundred feet from shore with the warm weather the past few days. Water temp is mid 30s so
we couldn't leave them in as long as they would like but still they had a ball. When we first got to the launch
ramp, we were treated to our first sighting ever of a Common Merganser. Very shy so I couldn't get close but got
a couple of telephoto shots. The female with the bushy hair doo and the male with the silky black and white sporting the bright
orange bills.

A Little FishingLakes in this area are still solid ice but looking
close to opening up. Temperatures in the 60s and even up in 70s today and tomorrow should help that. Went down to the Winnisquam
& Winnipesaukee area with the kayak yesterday to try for trout and salmon. Tied in with a couple of buddies and looked
for a spot with no ice. This time of year the wind will blow the looses ice from one side to another, what was open yesterday
might not be today. We ended up on Silver Lake. Had a beautiful day relaxing, a far cry from this last week of dealing with
the storm and its aftermath. BUT, no fish....that's why they call it fishing, not catching.
P.S. I think I want to start a Kayak Fishing Page here on LATORAP to share adventures and pictures.

After the Storm Well, we finally got power back
last night after having it go out on Sunday afternoon. Dont't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. It comes with the
territory when living in Paradise. Many around here are still without power or phone so we can be thankful that we aren't
one of them.
The storm came in early Sunday morning and we had heavy wet snow all day long. Our ground is pretty
saturated already and when the 50 mph winds with 70 mph gusts came around, a lot of trees couldn't hold up to it and went
down. We live in the woods so it starts taking its toll. Due to all of the granite, underground utilities aren't a real
option. At one point yesterday afternoon we received a report from the power company saying that in our community alone they
had 60 line breaks to repair and 5 power poles to replace. They have done some amazing work these past few days. All of New
Hampshire got hit hard, not just here in our area.
Time for some warm weather. We are supposed to have sun and
60 degree days Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That will be nice........More later

News Alert....Nor-easter supposed to hit today. We'll
see . At least its not a work day and we really don't have to head anywhere. Plenty of wood in for the wood stove and we have
plenty of groceries. So....hows about a game of Yahtzee and watch the snow fall. Depending on what forecast you look at we
could get 10" of snow or 28" of snow, take your pick. I took a few "before" pictures and will post some
"afters".

Almost a Month.... Here we are almost a month since my last entry...There have been so many things keeping
my attention, a few more storms and a busy load at work. Also we have to keep our priorities straight and be sure all equipment
is ready for fishing season. Gotta get the ice off the lakes first but that should be coming soon. Spent most of the morning
getting ready for another storm (supposedly a large Noreaster...we'll see) heading our way then I was able to
sit down to the computer. The good news is that I am finally ready to publish this web site.
Once I have done that I will definitely be posting here and adding photos to our "Current Photos" page more often.
As I have time I will be adding to our Europe and other Life Adventure photo albums.

Had a week (6 days) of weather in the 50s and not getting below freezing at night. We still had about a foot of snow
left on the ground by the time we got a fresh foot of nice powdery stuff on Friday night. Yesterday we had
at least 100 Gold Finches, Purple Finches, Nuthatches, Chicadees, Blue Jays, and Downy & Hairy Woodpeckers all over our
feeders. The warm weather got us thinking about if it would wake up the bears. While doing
some research we found this picture in a "Birds & Blooms" magazine. Thought others might enjoy.

Well, finished the fireplace and
finally got a couple nice daylight photos to post. We realize, though, that maybe we should re-shoot these photos since we
forgot to have the dog in the photo for a true before and after. But who is that much of a perfectionist.....It's only
taking me months to put this web site together for publishing.

Finally the Fireplace Well, I call it the fireplace but it is the brick hearth area where the woodstove sits. When we bought this house in February
of 2004, almost all wood and cabinets were dark colored. Patti had visions of how we could brighten the place up and felt
that at the same time, this would make the rooms feel larger. Since then we have done new lighter cabinets and some staining
of the walls to acheive that lighten of things. I had resisted the staining the walls, maybe because I knew it would be a
lot of work....maybe because I didn't want to cover the wood....maybe because I didn't think it would actually make
the room appear larger. Whatever that reasoning, I was definitely wrong. The staining happened and the room was much more
enjoyable and really did seem larger. It was nice. The next step would be a new mantle. What was there was a board on
a couple of book shelf brackets. I ordered rough sawn beams from the lumber mill and let them sit and dry for almost a year. Then in January we built our new
mantle. The next step would be to cover the dated, dirty, and dark used brick. We pick out some cultured stone by Owens Corning
and waited for delivery. This weekend is the installation. It is a chore but all good things include a little bit of work.
Friday evening we spent hours sorting the stone and laying it out in the pattern for the upper and lower areas of the back
wall. That is a key process. I really don't think we could have gotten the thing to fit correctly or have the top and
bottom areas appearances close with their mixture of sizes and shapes, had we not done those preliminary layouts. Yesterday morning I laid tarps and plastic then started in. I was putting the mortar on the wall and back of rock and putting
them in place to our pattern. Patti was coming along behind and working in the mortar seems between rocks, smoothing thhings
out and cleaning where I had dribble on the rocks. By the end of the day, we had done almost the entire bottom. This morning
I will run to the hardware for more mortar and then back at it. Maybe a stop at DD. The adventure will continue.

This Past WeekFinally got some good snow this past week, Wednesday and
Thursday. Total amounted to about 2 ft. We were due. The past couple Winters have been very lacking on white stuff.
The stone for the hearth came in Friday. Once we had it in hand, we could better see what other tools etc. we needed
for the project. Yesterday we picked up that stuff but then decided not to start this morning. If the project takes more than
a day, we have the mess setting around till we finish. We'll start next Saturday and be able to get it all done, cleaned
up, and enjoy it by Sunday afternoon.
Last Sunday morning we had 13 deer come through right next to the house.
Wednesday, during the storm, there were seven deer hunkered down under some close trees for a while.

Back to it... Well, I'm finally getting back to the actual
web site again. I have been doing a lot of scanning and photoshop work of the photos from Italy. We have decided that we will
probably go ahead and publish LATORAP.com once we have all of those photos into the web site. We can add on other photo
albums as I can get to them. Toooo bad we didn't have a good digital camera back then, scanning is a real pain.

Continuing the Work We started building this site on New Years
weekend. Here we are three weeks later and it still isn't published. What the heck, it has taken me years of thinking
about a web site to get to this point. Someday it will be ready for publishing and we will just keep plugging away to that
goal.
In the mean time, there is just so much neat stuff to do outside even if it is merely watching nature or
walking the dogs. The chill as one walks out the door make you feel alive (it's 3º this morning).
It
is fun to watch deer as they work their way through the woods grazing on what they can find. The Chickadees sit on the branches
almost next to you and chatter away in their own little Chickadee language while the Nuthatches wander up and down the trees
(definitely a sight to see). The Woodpeckers tap away on the trees, that is except for the big Pileated who sounds like a
machine gun going off in the woods and the squirrels racing from tree to tree or through the branches like acrobats. Lets
not forget the Turkeys who wander through the woods with their alien-like stare and leaving behind large "peace sign"
prints in the snow.
We also have a project going redoing the wood stove hearth area. Since New years we have put
up nd new mantle and supports, stained it and added copper accents. We lightly framed the area in and now the final step is
mortaring cultured stone River Rock over the old used brick.
In our spare time, we will continue working on the
development of this site.
